Once you’ve decided to take the plunge to become a claims adjuster, you need to know about licensing maintenance. While not every state specification is black and white (be sure to check with your state first), check out these tips and suggestions for obtaining and maintaining your adjuster licenses:
If you were a licensed claims adjuster through your employer, be sure to have the appointment removed.
Oftentimes when companies hire adjusters, they put the license appointments under their name. Once you are no longer their employee, you will need to call your state and find out the process to get the appointment removed. We recommend doing that as soon as possible.
Know which home state designation you need for your claims adjuster license.
When you’re getting your claims adjuster license, if you live in a state such as Iowa (i.e. one that doesn’t license adjusters), you’ll need to get a non-resident license of another state. When you obtain a non-resident license, remember which state you are designating as your home state. You’ll need this later on when and if you choose to apply for licenses in other states. A suggestion from our insurance recruiters: Texas and various other states will allow you to designate them as a home state if your resident state does not offer an adjusters’ license.
Know which states reciprocate with other states.
Some states will offer reciprocity to claims adjusters licenses, which can make the process so much easier. If you’ve previously passed an adjuster exam and you’re applying to a state that offers reciprocity, it can be as easy as filling out an online form.

Do you need to obtain a Company Claims Adjuster license? Or what about a Property and Casualty with Workers’ Compensation license? How long is the claims adjuster license good for?
Each state has different renewal periods for their adjuster licenses. Some states renew licenses every year, every two years, or three years and so on. Some states renew on the adjuster’s birth date or every December. It all depends on the state rules, so when you first get your license, ask and make note. You don’t want a lapse in your license!
Don’t let licensing be a headache. With a little attention, you can stay on top of what needs to be done. So, once you obtain your license, make sure you maintain it, renew it and participate in Continuing Education Credits. The license is mandatory if you want to be an adjuster.
